Artist Statement

​

    Big City Dreams (2025–present) is an ongoing series of oil paintings and drawings that reflect on the fading promise of the American dream through the personification of the contemporary urban metropolis. Several works function as unconventional self-portraits, depicting familiar objects held in the artist’s hand and executed alla-prima from direct observation. Other paintings employ symbolism, humor, and play to animate the cityscape, turning it into an antagonist.

    Across the series, warm color palettes, unexpected juxtapositions, and expressive brushwork introduce a sense of optimism, proposing a more benevolent reality within an otherwise unforgiving urban environment. The work negotiates a series of tensions: between humanity and the city, flesh and metal, life and concrete, the functional and the sacred, the domestic and the spiritual.
